Donavon J. Pfeiffer, Sr., husband of Margaret (Compagna) Pfieffer and father of 4, was a communicant of Good Shepherd Parish and attended St. Margaret Church in Old Orchard Beach.
Donavon converted to Catholicism so that he would be able to marry Margaret in the Catholic church—attending Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults so that he could do so, and asking Margaret to teach him how to say the rosary. He was also involved in Life in the Spirit seminars and Revere Retreats.
Donavon served in the U.S. Navy beginning in 1953, and retired in 1974, having attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Though he was born in Maryland and had lived in Virginia, he chose Maine to be his home after retiring from the Navy.
He returned to school, earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business, and then began a teaching career—working with the University of Southern Maine, Husson College, Southern Maine Technical College, and Mid State College in Lewiston, where he became Chair of Business and Accounting. A kind and gentle man, he loved teaching and was known for being willing to teach anyone that wanted to learn, taking extra time with students who needed help.
